Who is Project 2019 Milwaukee Chapter?
"Project 2019" is a nationwide movement by Black America to reach educational parity with the rest of America by the year 2019 -- the 400th anniversary of the beginning of Slavery in America. Project 2019 was founded by Charles Sanford in 1998; the Milwaukee Chapter of Project 2019 was founded by Mileka Aljuwani in May of 2002.
The services of Project 2019 Milwaukee Chapter include tutoring, career counseling, college preparation counseling and support, assistance for students of all ages, and other services as demand dictates and resources permit. We work with students in public, private, parochial or home school.
Our goal is to close the Black college graduation gap and we are clear that starts early in life, so we are willing to work with all ages and grade levels, as well as those who are not presently in school. We promote lifelong learning. We are particularly concerned about students who are behind or failing, but we also want to support students who are doing well, along with those who want to get ahead, for educational success is never easy for anyone to attain.
Project 2019 is a grassroots, self-funded volunteer effort. We get no funds from government, corporate, foundation, school system or other institutional sources. We need more volunteers, especially tutors, counselors and mentors. Your financial donations are appreciated too- Project 2019 is not a for-profit effort and we do not have tax-exempt status.

***EDUCATION ALERT!!***
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on August 7 that 38% of MPS schools face sanctions if they do not improve reading and math results. This includes most of the larger high schools. At any rate, this covers a large number of students. How are these students going to make it in college? How will they even get in college if they can't handle math and reading now?
This is all the more reason why the work of Project 2019 is so important. It's not enough to just sit up in school, get passed along, and then receive a diploma at the end that essentially means nothing because you've learned nothing. That is not going to help the Black community. We must have all of our children excelling in school.

PROJECT 2019 MILWAUKEE CHAPTER PRESENTS:
"BLACK TO SCHOOL INFO-FEST"
On August 24 we will be putting on a "Black to School Info-Fest." This event, which takes place at Johnsons Park on 17th and Fond du Lac, will run from 11 am to 6 pm. The most important feature of this event is vital information in the form of mini-lectures and workshops on subjects like "The Black Origins of Academic Disciplines," "Special Ed, Ritalin and Black Children," "Bringing out the Genius of Black Children," Helping Black Children Learn," and more. Presenters include Dr. William Rogers, Oshiyemi Adelabu, Janette Herrera, M.Ed, and others. We expect this day to be very enlightening and even transformational.
We will offer some of the usual things like food, games, entertainment, etc. We will also have some awards to specifically thank those who have supported our work. School supplies will be given to people who take one of our educational tests at the info-fest and/or those who are already signed up for our services.
Special thanks to John Bowles of Urban Developers LLC for his co-sponsorship of this event. We welcome other sponsors- anyone interested in sponsoring this great event should call us ASAP. Volunteers who can help put this on are also needed. Most of all, get the word out and invite others to come.

RECENT PROJECT 2019 MILWAUKEE CHAPTER WORK
We have met with several people who want us to provide them with tutoring and counseling services. This is the most important part of our work- actually meeting face-to-face with people who want help with their education or that of their children.
A number of institutions and organizations are interested in working with Project 2019 in some capacity, and we are talking to them, seeing what we can do together. As things are solidified we will announce accordingly.
The word about Project 2019 Milwaukee Chapter is really getting around! We had an article in the July 15 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, which brought a number of inquiries, including parents wanting tutoring for their children. It also got us a few people who want to help with our work. Project 2019 meetings and events are also announced through other media such as radio station WMCS-1290 AM, The Milwaukee Times, the Milwaukee Courier, and the Milwaukee Community Journal. We've been on Channel 6 news too.
We had booths at two different National Night Out events. One was on August 1 at 34th and Wells and was put on by the West End Community Association and Vets Place Central. The other was at Dineen Park on August 6th and was sponsored by the Milwaukee Police Department's 4th and 7th District stations, among others.
We also had a booth at African World Festival, which we were able to share with Concordia University. Thanks to Taryn Moore and her children Danielle and Troy for helping with this booth.
On August 10 we were able to have booths at the back-to-school event in Martin Luther King Park and at LAND Fair on Lisbon Avenue.
Of course, we always distribute and post flyers wherever we can.
We thank all of these events/venues, their sponsors, and the media for helping us promote Project 2019. Also thanks to all who hand out flyers and do other things to promote our work.

FUTURE EVENTS AND HELP NEEDED
There will be a back-to-school event on Saturday, August 17, at Parklawn YMCA from 10 to 3. Mileka will be out of town on that day so coverage of our booth there will be needed, especially after 1:00. If someone can come and give a very short presentation on Project 2019 that would be great too.
The next Project 2019 chapter meeting will be held at 6:00 pm Wednesday, August 21, 2002 at 2850 N. Teutonia Ave (Near Locust). The priority for this meeting is putting the final touches on the Black To School Info-Fest, but we hope to cover some pertinent education issues as well. As with all meetings, kids and teens are welcome and we will have refreshments.
Northwest Side CDC will have a back to school event on Saturday, August 31. We have been invited to set up a booth there too- if anyone wants to help staff it let us know.
Monthly "Black In School" meetings will be held so that people can come and discuss issues pertaining to Black students and school. The first one will follow our regular chapter meeting in September (Date to be announced)- future meetings will take place separate from chapter meetings if members wish.
We need tutors for Trigonometry for a few of our high school students who will be taking it this year in school. These students want to get ahead on the material and get really good grades.
As always, we need people willing to tutor, counsel, or mentor those who seek our help. Training, guidance, support and resources are provided to all who are willing to help.
People who want to do workshops on various subjects should let us know. We will need folks who can do workshops on test preparation (ACT, SAT, etc.) soon so that students can be prepared for upcoming tests.
If you know of other events where we can have a booth, speak, or distribute literature let us know. We want to get to as many places as possible.
We always need people to call in or go in person to announce our services and events on local talk shows, especially "The Morning Magazine," which runs from 7-10 am during the week on WMCS-1290 AM (799-1290); "The Word Warriors, from 8 to 10 am during the week on WNOV-860 AM (799-1668); "Talking Cops Cops Talking," on 860 from 8-9 Saturdays; "Let's Talk Neighborhoods" on 860 from 10-11am Saturdays. If you do this, make sure you have the information right and that you include our phone number so that folks can call us. Don't call in when they say they're dealing with a specific topic and always thank the hosts for allowing us this opportunity. If you want some assistance in how to call talk shows let us know.

PARENT EDUCATOR TRAINING AVAILABLE
The success of preschool, K-12 and even college education depends greatly on the parent(s) of the student. There are many things that only a parent is able to do to support a student's education because parents are the main ones legally responsible for their child(ren). Also, parents have more time with the child(ren) than the school or anyone else.
Yet, many parents are wondering what they need to do to help their children succeed academically. To begin to meet that need, Project 2019 Milwaukee Chapter is setting up Parent Educator Training sessions. Most of them will be on weekday evenings or on Saturday but other times can be arranged.
If you want to sign up let us know, and feel free to pass this info on to others.
\\\\\/////////////\\\\\\//////////\\\\\\\\\\/////////\\\\\\\\\/////////\\\\\\\\////////\\\\\\\\///////////\\\\\\//////////\\\\\\\\/////////\\\\\\\/////////\\\\\\//////////\\\\\\\\\\\//////

If you are considering going back to school, taking an exam to get a new or better job, getting a GED or HSED, or just want to improve your skills sign up today-dates and times to be announced.

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT RESEARCH UNDERWAY
How we develop is vital to knowing how to best meet our educational needs. This is why Project 2019 Milwaukee Chapter is researching the latest information in human development, both child and adult. We are also researching specific issues related to Black child and adult development. All this information will be made available through media, workshops, videos, etc. If you know of resources in these areas let us know.
