OVERVIEW OF A PROJECT 2019 "BLACK-TO-SCHOOL
FEST"
(1) DATE OF THE EVENT:
The optimal day and time will usually be a Saturday or Sunday afternoon between
mid-August and late-August. The date should be selected as far in advance of
the event as possible. Note that after planning and staging the event the first
time, it will be easier to do so in subsequent years.
(2) LOCATION FOR THE EVENT:
Possibilities include "parks" or other grassy areas, large church
parking lots, etc. Ideally, the site should include a field house or similar
structure, a church basement, etc., that is large enough to accommodate the
attendees for a program and to move some activities inside in case of inclement
weather.
(3) ATTENDEES:
Attendees may include neighborhood (and other) youths, parents, supporters,
etc. The number of attendees should be based on the size of the venue, available
funds, the degree of success in obtaining donations of school supplies (book
bags, pens, pencils, paper, etc.) and food, etc. from area merchants and other
supporters.
(4) ENTERTAIMENT & ACTIVITIES:
There are many possibilities for entertainment and activities. In addition to
musical artists, games, arts and crafts, etc., that one might find at most street
festivals, educational based entertainment and educational activities should
be included. Booths or tables can be provided for representatives from local
colleges. (If a representative cannot attend, a college can provides literature
for the event). Presentations and workshops can be done for parents and students
on any number of educational subjects and issues -- good study habits, how to
prepare for tests, when and how to plan for college, how to pay for college,
etc. etc., etc.
(5) FOOD
Food and / or snacks should be available for attendees. The amount and type
of food and / or snacks will depend on the budget for the event, donations from
area merchants, etc.
(6) PROGRAM
During the event, an official program should be conducted in order to thank
event leaders, volunteers, supporters, attendees, etc. -- to explain the purpose
of the event -- to announce future programs -- etc. A guest speaker or entertainer
may be included on the program, etc.
