Establishing Project 2019 Chapters all across America is the best way to involve and engage the greatest possible number of black Americans in our goal of increasing the education and knowledge level of black America. This will happen only with your help. Charles Sanford, the author of "Project 2019" and one of the founders of the "Project 2019 Movement,"will participate in the Malcolm X College (Chicago, IL) celebration of Black History Month. Mr. Sanford will present "Making Black History" on Tuesday, February 13th and Thursday, February 15th. A very special thank you is given to Robert Allen of Malcolm X College for his dedication and support of his school and Project 2019.

You are invited to submit recorded material -- including: readings, poetry, opinions, information, news, speeches, interviews, etc. -- for broadcast on "Project 2019 Radio." However, note that all programming to be broadcast on "Project 2019 Radio" must be submitted in "MP3" file format. (FYI, almost every song that one listens to or downloads from the Internet is an MP3 file.)

One can easily create a voice recording as an MP3 file and there are various ways and products that can be used to do so. One way is to use a PC microphone and free software provided by "Live365." (Live365 is a major service provider for Internet radio stations, including "Project 2019 Radio.") Our beloved sister, Mileka Aljuwani, the National Executive Director of Project 2019, has lost her courageous battle with cancer. The entire Project 2019 family is heartbroken by the loss of our beautiful, intelligent, dedicated leader.

Mileka wanted everyone to know that she regarded Project 2019 as our legacy and that the best way to honor her was for each of us to work harder and to do more to ensure the success of Project 2019. One of our first actions will be the establishment of a scholarship fund in Mileka's name. As additional information becomes available, it will be passed on to you and/or posted on the Project 2019 Web site.

The problems that shut down the Project 2019 Web site for the past few weeks have been resolved. Although the exact cause of the problems has not yet been determined, some have suggested the possibility of sabotage. As Project 2019 continues to become more and more widely recognized as the most logical and certainly the only viable solution to the problems that afflict black America, there will be those who will desperately want Project 2019 to fail.

Project 2019 Radio is currently up and running -- 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Thus far, programming is limited but it will be expanded as quickly as possible.

The "Project 2019 Movement" Internet Radio Program is still in the works. We are hopeful that we will air our first program in August. In defense of the station owners and operators, it is not an easy task to establish and bring on line a quality talk radio station. But, they will make it happen -- it's just a matter of time.

 Project 2019 is proud to announce the opening of the "Project 2019 Education and Recreation Center" (PERC) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The first official event at the PERC will be a Black History Month celebration on Saturday, February 12th from 12 noon until 4:00 pm. A grand opening celebration is being planned for March, 2005. Project 2019 has reached an agreement with "Hundred Schools Publishing" to publish a second Project 2019 book in late 2004 as follows:

Working Title ........: "Project 2019 : The Voices of Black America"
Format ...................: Anthology -- consisting of 20 to 24 articles -- between 3,000 and 5,000 words each.
Subject Matter ..... : Must address (in general) the necessity, and/or the problems or opportunities, and/or the end results, etc. of black America reaching educational parity -- or -- must address (specifically) the ideals, and/or the logic and wisdom, and/or the goals, and/or the strategy, etc. of the Project 2019 Movement.

Submission Deadline : July 31, 2004

The Project 2019 Milwaukee Chapter will sponsor a second school board candidates forum prior to the school board elections for the Milwaukee Public School system that will be held on April 1st. The city wide seat and three districts all have contested races.

The first forum, held on Monday, March 17th, was extremely successful. After an introductory presentation by local and nationally known educator Taki Raton, the candidates responded to the insightful questions asked and issues raised by the concerned citizens in attendance.

Please join our efforts to have "Slavery" recognized as a proper noun (upper-case "S") when referring to:

"The institution of chattel slavery in North and South America involving African people and their descendants from the 16th century through the latter part of the 19th century. Also, "chattel slavery in America during the 246 year period from 1619 to 1865."

One Obvious Justification For Recognizing "Slavery: As A Proper Noun
In all major dictionaries, there is a definition for the word "holocaust" as a "noun" -- and a definition for "Holocaust" as a "proper noun." For example, in addition to its definition of "holocaust" as a noun, Random House defines "Holocaust" (as a proper noun) as "the systematic mass extermination of European Jews in Nazi concentration camps prior to and during WWII."

If "Holocaust" is recognized as a proper noun to define what Nazi Germany did to European Jews for 12 years, then "Slavery" should be recognized as a proper noun to define what was done to African people for almost 400 years.

William Andrekopoulos, Superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools, was among the guests who attended the December 21st meeting of the Milwaukee Chapter of Project 2019. After Superintendent Andrekopoulos presented his plans for closing the education gap between white and black students, he answered questions and addressed concerns raised by those in attendance.

The meeting also included remarks by Charles Sanford, the author of "Project 2019," and a review of the many successes of the Milwaukee Chapter during the seven months since it was founded by the Chapter President, Mileka Aljuwani.

Congratulations to Mileka Aljuwani and her Project 2019 Milwaukee Chapter on the success of their
"Black To School Info-Fest" held on Saturday, August 24th in Johnsons Park.

More than 100 adults and children attended this event which featured games, entertainment, great food, awards, prizes, and excellent speakers. A highlight of the event was the distribution of school supplies (book bags, pens, pencils, notebooks, paper, etc.) to those who participated in the activities.

"Are you looking for the identity of the "Dutch" ship bringing the first Africans to Virginia in 1619? Its name and history, and the identity of its infamous captain have just been discovered by myself. A book is due out soon. All rights reserved. I would like to offer a correction to your story on the "Black Mayflower": the "Dutch" ship consorting with the Treasurer was not in the employ of Warwick, but a privateer licensed with a Dutch Marque.
Its captain was an infamous and legendary individual known the world over. The Treasurer was indeed Warwick's and was licensed with a marque from Savoy. That marque had expired at the time of the capture of the Bautista, and the Treasurer was technically a pirate. However the "Dutch" ship held a valid marque."

(The Story Of The "Black Mayflower") All American children are taught the story of the Pilgrims and the ship, the Mayflower, that brought them to Plymouth Rock in late Autumn of 1620. The following year, the Governor of the Plymouth colony proclaimed a day of "Thanksgiving" to celebrate their first harvest in America.

On the other hand, little is known or taught about the blacks who arrived in the Jamestown Colony in 1619, more than a year before the arrival of the Mayflower in America. Jamestown, which was established in 1607, was the first permanent English Colony in North America. Although there were already blacks living in Jamestown prior to 1619, the arrival of approximately 20 blacks in 1619 marks the official beginning of Slavery in America.

On Sunday, October 29th, Charles Sanford, author of the book, "Project 2019," visited the newly formed Atlanta Chapter of Project 2019. He reports that his visit to Atlanta was "extremely rewarding." A great deal of information was exchanged and additional groundwork was established to ensure the success of the Chapter. He also reports that the fellowship with the members of the Atlanta Chapter was "inspiring" and that he was thoroughly convinced that they were destined to succeed in all of their endeavors. Additionally, it was decided that Mr. Sanford would return to Atlanta for a Project 2019 Event in January of 2001.

The federal government's "National Assessment of Educational Progress" report for 1999 has been released. Among other disturbing trends:

The report shows a WIDENING GAP in the test performance of White and Black elementary school students in Reading, Math, and Science.

Also, Black 17-year-olds are, on average, still FOUR YEARS BEHIND Whites in reading skills.

If there was ever a time for all of black America to support Project 2019, that time is NOW. Only Project 2019 can save black America.

The St. James A.M.E. Church "Heritage and Horizons" Program was an enlightening and a very rewarding experience. This program, held on March 4th, was the culmination of St. James' month-long Black History Month celebration. There was an abundance of beautiful music (including selections by Rev. The Project 2019 seminar held on Saturday, November 14th was a tremendous success.

This seminar was designed for high school students and was attended by 23 teens. The seminar focused on three of the key tenets of Project 2019:
- Only black America can save black America
- Knowledge is power
- "You" have to pay your dues

On July 8th, I had the opportunity to discuss Project 2019 on the Mike Malloy radio talk show (WLS - AM). Although I was not surprised, I was certainly disappointed by the negative responses from a few blacks Americans who called the show to comment on my remarks. I am sure you agree that such "excuses, objections, and rationales" are only further proof of the value and the necessity of Project 2019. Here is a sampling of the "excuses" and my responses to them:

"Lack of education is not the problem. Racism is the problem."
It is true that racism exists in America. However, racism has always existed in America and, undoubted, it always will. Therefore, what matters is the extent to which racism impedes the success of black Americans. During Slavery, racism was at least 95% of "the problem." During the Jim Crow era, racism accounted for between 40% and 60% of black America's problems. However, in the Equal Opportunity era, racism can be blamed for only about 10% of black America's failings. What has not changed is that black Americans are the least educated and least knowledgeable racial group in America. This was true in 1619. It is true in 1998. Therefore, if one accepts the truism that "knowledge is power," then, in 1998, lack of knowledge is clearly black America's "most critical problem."

"It is impossible to get a quality education in an impoverished black community."
Almost every college graduate that I know is a product of impoverished inner city schools. And it is worth noting that the only exceptions are the children of these college graduates. If black children are truly made to understand the importance of education, if a thirst for knowledge is instilled within them, then one way or another they will get a "quality education." Indeed, if black youths were to spend half the time reading that they spend playing basketball, watching TV, and listening to rap music, black America would reach educational equality well before 2019.

"What does a college degree matter if you still can't find a job?"
Apparently, somewhere in America, there is at least one black college graduate who can not find a job. Personally, every black college graduate that I know has a job and is making considerably more money than black Americans who do not have college degrees. It may be true that black college graduates do not do as well as their white counterparts, but a big part of the reason is that they usually work for white bosses. However, even this would change if we had more black college graduates in the work force competing for and getting upper management positions.

The Heroes of Project 2019 have many battles to fight. The following story from the Associated Press is evidence of one more battle that we must fight and win. The tittle of the article is "Racial Gap Found In Computer Usage."

White students in high school and college are far more likely than black students to have home computers and use the World Wide Web, even after accounting for differences in income according to a new study.
"A significant segment of our society is in danger of being denied equal access to the Internet," the authors said.
The study, to be published Friday in Science, found whites in general are more likely to have a computer at home and to have used the Web recently. The biggest disparity surfaced when comparing students.
"We can't explain that by income," said Donna Hoffman, an associate professor at Vanderbilt University who help write the study. "There must be some racial or cultural or social factors. It really needs to be looked into."
The study indicated that 73 percent of white students had a computer at their home. Only 33 percent of black students did.
Among all ages, 44 percent of whites owned a home computer, compared with 29 percent of blacks.
The study was based on telephone interviews of 5,813 people in December 1996 and January 1997 by Nielsen Media Research.
The study indicated that 59 percent of whites used the Web in the previous six months, compared with 31 percent of blacks.
The gap was widest among races when people didn't own a home computer. Researchers said that suggests white students without their own computer are finding other places - such as schools, libraries or cybercafes - to access the Internet. Among students who had access to a home computer, there were only negligible differences in Web use.
